Market Update
Earlier this week headlines were all about Michael Burry's BIG short position in Tesla. According to this 13F filing by his private investment firm, Scion Asset Management, he has a short position worth roughly 800,100 shares (through PUT options) on Tesla that is valued at roughly 500 million dollars. This dates back to earlier in January when he publicly announced that Tesla's valuation wasn't sustainable.
What many investors don't know is that there may be more to his position that meets the eye. For example, the 13F only requires him to file his LONG short position. He may have also sold a position against it (creating a spread). All we know is that he bought 8,001 put options, but we don't know what strike price. We also don't know how far out of the money he purchased his PUT options. The $200 strike puts would be significantly cheaper than a $600 strike put option, so it's all a guessing game what his position actually is.
Moving Along
What really caught my attention in the 13F filing that flew under the radar was his $47 million dollar bet in Kraft Heinz (KHC), nearly doubling his existing position in the stock. Who else has recently invested in Heinz? The GOAT himself, Warren Buffet. This is a possible inflation play, and pretty smart in my opinion. Nobody is going to be buying tomatoes in grocery stores when they hit $20 per tomato. What will people be buying? $100 ketchup because everybody needs ketchup.
Introduction to the VigTec platform
In last week's newsletter I mentioned Snowflake (SNOW) and how it saw some unusual call option activity right at the open from Friday's session. What happened with the price action this week? It followed through nicely with some bullish activity and now sits at $233.50 (up from $195 on Friday), a 20% increase in just one week.
How did I find this unusual activity? I've been integrating VigTec.io into my trading strategies and utilizing some of their brilliant features. The platform has a PLETHORA of features and scans, and so to really get a feel for it you need to use it for 2-3 days. Luckily, they do have a 7-day free trial, so give it a go to get the hang of it. Use the code SWAGGY10 at checkout to receive $10 off your subscription each month. Furthermore, at some point next week I will be creating an in-depth guide on which scans I like to use myself.
I'll go through a quick rundown on the features available through the web-app (they do have a pretty slick mobile app coming soon).
1. Explore - The explore page allows you to find stocks in any and every category, industry, or sector, and gives them their own "grade" primarily based on option flow data and trends. Filter through large/mid/small cap stocks, international stocks, currencies, and then break them down further into extremely focused sub-categories.
2. Watchlists - I've already uploaded my watchlist of 250 tickers and this feature is great for two reasons. The first is that you can easily scroll through your list and see current trends in price. The second is that the watchlist feature can be implemented into the "Options Matrix" which will track unusual options activity for only those tickers in the specific watchlist instead of the entire universe of tickers (there is A LOT of data on the site).
3. Live Charts - These charts are different from your typical platform because they have great visuals that display where the momentum and money is flowing, as well as the integration of options data (kind of like gamma exposure) into the charts. You can see exactly where a big volume trade might be affecting the momentum of the stock price. Very cool.
4. Market Indicator - This is essentially a "widgets" page that shows a "bullish" or "bearish" signal for each ticker based on trend, momentum, and options data. This is similar to MoneyCNN's "Fear & Greed" indicator.
5. Options Matrix - This feature has a LIVE FEED of literally every options order that hit's the tape (with a minimum value of premium). This is by far my favorite feature on the site and you can really spend a couple hours (or the entire day) digging into the data. During market hours the feed displays all the data in a waterfall and goes on and on and on. However, you can set it to display only the tickers on a specific watchlist and then drill down each ticker to view all the different block trades. You can choose to display the data using cool bubble charts that really gives you a feel for how much volume of trades are coming in for a specific option and if it was more on the bearish or bullish side. Check this out.
6. Options Lab - This is basically an options calculation engine. You submit the ticker along with what kind of plays you are looking for (bullish, bearish, volatility) and it spits out different options strategies within a few seconds.
Overall I am SUPER impressed with the VigTec platform and the quality of not only the data, but how everything is displayed in charts that are easy to understand. The team behind the platform are traders themselves and know what they are doing. Those of you interested in using the platform don't forget to use the code SWAGGY10 to apply the discount ($10 off).
